Where can you find babysitters in Costa Rica?

At Kiddos Costa Rica, we have recruited a group of babysitters in most areas of the country with the availability of moving easily to your hotel, Airbnb or vacation rental. If your need is for a few hours a day or a full time travel nanny to join you on your whole trip, we can accommodate these requests.

We provide both services in the Guanacaste Area on the North Pacific, covering the Tamarindo area which is one of the most popular family destinations, as well as Nosara for all the surfer parents in a super laid back environment.

Also Santa Teresa and Montezuma, which are becoming popular destinations.. In the central pacific such as playa Jaco, Hermosa and Manuel Antonio, all the way down to the Osa Peninsula. San José the capital is one of our locations as well, and last but not least our Caribbean Coast from Cahuita to all the beaches from Puerto Viejo to Manzanillo.

How much do babysitters cost in Costa Rica?

For an experienced, qualified, bilingual babysitter the cost per hour ranges from $15 per child up to $35 for 5 children with a minimum of 4 hours per day.

For a travel nanny the rate will be the same, starting at $15, with the family covering the private room for the nanny usually in the same house where they will be staying, or close by, as well as the meals. Most of the time the nanny cooks for herself and she has access to the family kitchen and food.

We don’t have special requirements for food, but we like to make sure the nannies are well fed and rested to be able to provide the best service for your children. For traveling nannies, a transportation fee may be added to get the nanny to where the family will be located. Depending on how far she must go, this may work out at around $100 for a round trip.

What are the different types of babysitters in Costa Rica?

You can book babysitters and nannies for a few hours or for a few weeks. They can help out at your hotel or as an active travel partner.  We have babysitters available by the hour. They will come to your location for a minimum of 4 hours a day to take care of your child while you enjoy a day off or night out.

Your babysitter can prepare a light meal or snacks for the children, organize activities inside the accommodation or even outdoor games, always with prior authorization from the parents. The activities and food are discussed with the parents first, as well as any other details that must be followed.

We offer travel nanny services as well. This nanny will be joining the family through most of their plans and will be traveling and staying with you around Costa Rica. They are required most of the time to bring the children on separate tours or adventures such as:

  • Animal viewing
  • Cacao tours
  • Cooking
  • Art
  • Surf lessons
  • Swimming in the pool
  • Playing indoors

The choice of activities depends on the ages of the children and other factors.

Also your nanny can help with light meal prep, ordering room service, lunch or dinner out. She will assist with nap time (if necessary) and all the basics like bath time, reading books and putting the kids to bed. She will alway make the children feel comfortable and in good hands,  while the parents get free time to enjoy other vacation activities.

For each nanny we provide a profile that describes their specific abilities and personality, as well as providing a photo. More specific questions can be answered through messaging or a video call.

The nanny has a set schedule agreed in collaboration with the parents, covering up to 10 hours a day. Naturally, this can be flexible to accommodate changing family needs. Taking the nanny’s resting time into consideration, some families divide the time up throughout the day. So the schedule may involve some hours in the morning, a break for the nanny in the afternoon and more hours at night time.

Others prefer 8 hours at once or 10 hours at once, and you should remember that traveling by car counts as working hours. Our nannies can eat with the families or cook for themselves as appropriate, so we kindly ask the parents to provide proper items for her to have available.

How do you know if a babysitter is qualified?

Our team is a network of babysitters that we have carefully selected based on their unique abilities to care for as well as to touch the hearts of children.

One of our main focuses when creating Kiddos Costa Rica was making sure that we carefully interview and recruit women with specific qualifications. We only consider those who can provide the best well-rounded care for the children, while offering parents a professional service that will satisfy expectations.

Our team of babysitters is a small one, as we are careful with our selection, and are discerning about adding more to our team. For us quality is a priority. I can tell you that I personally know all the babysitters, most of them for a few years now and I trust and respect their work.

I also understand the responsibility, patience and love that this job actually requires, the importance not only of taking care of someone’s child, but to accompany them in their growth and make a positive impact on their lives, while they feel safe and comfortable, even if it’s only for a few days.

About our babysitters:

  • They are non-smokers, over 19 years old and have no criminal record. They come with great recommendations from previous families.
  • All have at least 2 years of experience working with kids on a professional level. This may include working in a daycare, kindergarten , babysitting agency, or freelancing with positive recommendations.
  • Some are certified preschool teachers or long term international nannies. They typically have lots of experience with different cultures, and some are mothers themselves.
  • Our team members are bilingual in English and Spanish. Some also speak Russian, German, French, or Italian.
  • They have CPR qualifications, competent swimming skills, and the ability to teach basic Spanish.
  • They have a deep understanding of emotional intelligence. Some have experience working with autistic children, or taking care of newborns and toddlers.
  • Flexible and open to last minute changes.

All our nannies and babysitters have different skills and ways to engage with children. We allow each babysitter the freedom to make their experience special in whatever way seems appropriate. Some of the activities we encourage include arts and crafts, making music, singing and dancing, and preparing food.

How can I find a certified babysitter in Costa Rica?

In Costa Rica we have not found a way of certifying babysitters which is why we have focused on developing a network of child-care givers with a set of admirable qualities. We go deeper into the recruitment process and the background investigation.

We set them up with CPR certifications and guide them to developing certain skills and capacities that they are interested in acquiring.

How do you pick between different babysitters?

This will be a matter of who resonates with what, as everyone has different preferences. Some have more experience working with younger kids, others are more interested in working with older kids.

Parents will have access to their profile, which gives more detailed information and a photo. We also offer video calls between the babysitters and the parents to have direct contact, this interaction usually facilitates the decision for the parents.

How do I choose a babysitter that’s right for my kid?

This is the part where we can guide you, based on what parents are looking for and what you can tell us about your child’s personality and needs, we can match you with the babysitter whose preference, skills, and background are perfect for your child.

How do I make sure my babysitter is trustworthy?

Our experience working with families has highlighted the importance of investigating prospective babysitters and nannies thoroughly. We check that they have a clear criminal record and impeccable recommendations.

Each team member signs an agreement about keeping and respecting the privacy of each family. This means no pictures without authorization from the parents, limited use of cell phones, and no sharing of information beyond the family. Breaking this agreement results in immediate termination.

We have close working relationships with each individual, regularly discussing their work and ensuring their commitment to honesty, transparency, and working with integrity.

Is it customary to tip babysitters in Costa Rica?

Absolutely, all jobs in tourism are accustomed and appreciative of tips. This would of course vary based on the performance of the babysitter but also on the time that she worked for the family.

For a day or two of working full time, a proper tip will be around $30. If the nanny works with you for a whole month, then around $100  would be appropriate.

Although not mandatory, these gratuities are very much appreciated by Costa Rican workers. The tip should be given directly to the babysitter on her last day with the family, as a thank you for all her efforts.

What are the payment options for babysitters in Costa Rica?

Here are the payment options we recommend:

  • PayPal (best option)
  • Bank Transfer (this gets complicated most of the time because they are international transfers)
  • Cash (I would prefer that our babysitter does not get involved in the payment but sometimes it has to be cash and so it is the only choice).

How do I negotiate the babysitter’s rate and payment terms?

To negotiate the babysitter’s rate and payment terms, please reach out to us directly through the website before confirming your booking. It’s important to note that our babysitters aren’t authorized to discuss rates or accept payments, aside from tips. As a local business run by entrepreneurial moms, your booking supports not just the babysitter, but also the team behind the scenes. We aim for fair pricing that benefits everyone involved.

You can get all the details and negotiate rates by messaging us on WhatsApp. If you prefer a more personal touch, we’re happy to set up a call to walk you through the process and answer any questions you may have.

How do babysitter rates vary by region within Costa Rica?

In Costa Rica, babysitter rates don’t vary by region; they’re determined by the babysitter’s qualifications and experience. The more qualified and experienced the babysitter, the higher the rate. Our platform is designed to help you find a babysitter who meets your specific needs in terms of care and expertise.

While babysitter rates may not differ by location, the cost of living certainly does. Many families find Costa Rica to be one of the more expensive travel destinations, particularly post-pandemic. For instance, the Guanacaste area on the Pacific coast tends to be pricier due to a surge in international tourism and a growing expat community. This region attracts a diverse crowd—from surfers to retirees—thanks to its various climates, rich wildlife, and excellent healthcare system.

Traveling within Costa Rica is relatively easy. You can get from San José, the capital, to either the Pacific or the Caribbean side in about 4 to 6 hours by car or a 45-minute flight from the international airport in Alajuela. San José itself is a bustling city with a range of options, from high-end areas to more traditional, budget-friendly neighborhoods.

If you’re considering more remote areas like Pavones and Drake Bay, be prepared for higher transportation and food costs, given the effort required to get supplies to these locations. However, smaller towns often offer more personalized attention and may have varying prices for accommodations and dining.

So, while babysitter rates remain constant, other expenses can vary significantly depending on where you are in Costa Rica. Plan accordingly to make the most of your experience.

Is it possible to hire a babysitter for a short-term stay in Costa Rica?

Absolutely, hiring a babysitter for a short-term stay in Costa Rica is definitely possible, subject to the babysitter’s availability. We offer a range of options to fit your needs—you can hire a babysitter for as short as two weeks or as long as three months.

Whether you’re looking for a live-in nanny, a travel nanny, or a daily babysitter who lives separately, we can tailor our services to meet your specific requirements. Just reach out to us with your needs, and we’ll do our best to accommodate you.

What is the cancellation policy for babysitters in Costa Rica?

Our cancellation policy is designed to be fair to both families and babysitters. To confirm your booking, we require a 30% deposit. If you need to cancel, you’ll receive a full refund of your deposit as long as you cancel at least 72 hours in advance. If you cancel within 72 hours of the service, the deposit is non-refundable.

Should you need to cancel after the babysitter has already arrived, the deposit will be kept, and you’ll only be responsible for covering the babysitter’s transportation costs.

If you need to reschedule, there are no additional charges. However, please note that we have a minimum booking requirement of four hours. So, even if you decide to use fewer hours, you’ll still be billed for the full four-hour commitment.

Do babysitters in Costa Rica offer overnight services?

Yes, we have several babysitters who do help with caring for the kids through the night and these special services are negotiable depending on the needs of the family. The rate for the overnight service starts at  $20 an hour plus transportation.

How do I find an English speaking babysitter in Costa Rica?

Bilingual babysitters are best found through agencies. Most of the babysitters in our network are bilingual and we can choose a babysitter that is right for your family’s needs. Some of the babysitters are Costa Rican and have learned English from a work environment or in school.

Other babysitters are foreigners living here and so already spoke several languages before moving to Costa Rica.

Are there any bilingual babysitters in Costa Rica?

Yes, speaking English and European languages in Costa Rica has become very common because of the increase in tourism in the last decade. This country has become very rich in cultures and the people are used to hearing a variety of languages.

Can a babysitter help my child with Spanish?

The babysitter can help not only the child but also the parents. Most of the time babysitters facilitate communication for those parents that don’t speak the language.

Although many Costa Ricans speak English, it’s comforting for families to travel knowing they have a native Spanish speaker on hand. Through hearing Spanish frequently throughout the day, the family learns through immersion—the best way to absorb a language!

Can I speak to my babysitter before making a hiring decision?

Once the reservation is confirmed the parents will have a video call with the babysitter. This provides an opportunity to discuss details, and refine specific needs.

Will babysitters play activities with my children?

Our babysitters have a list of age appropriate activities and material to bring over to entertain the children according to their age, preference, the weather conditions, etc. We like to keep kids active, and spending time outdoors is a great way to enjoy this country. Based on your preferences, we can keep children in the shade, or use different qualities of sunblock, mosquito repellent, all according to your child’s needs as well as the babysitter’s discernment.

Costa Rica has created more and more options for families, so children can be included on many tours nowadays, such as:

  • Crocodile tours
  • Cacao tours
  • Kayaking in the mangroves
  • Zip-lining
  • ATV riding

There are some adventure parks where the babysitter can cater to the children, while the parents participate more freely on the tours. After considering the babysitter’s detailed profile, then chatting with her over video, you will be well placed to decide what kind of activities will suit your family.

Can I get a babysitter for a newborn?

Yes, we do have babysitters qualified in working with newborns. These care-givers have experience working long-term with infants and have a certain preference for working with this stage of life.

References are available and we have personal relationships with these women who we trust with this work. With this aid by your side, you will be able to have more freedom and a lighter load during your stay. As with any other babysitter her availability may vary, so in this case the earlier you can reach us the easier it will be for us to make sure we have the best candidate available for you and your newborn.

Can I read reviews of babysitters?

We can connect you with previous parents to share their experience working with a specific babysitter, which we find even better than a written review. Our objective is to truly put a qualified babysitter in your hands.

How can I find a fun babysitter?

Usually the youngest babysitters are the most fun and energetic. If fun is on your list and your kid is very active my recommendation is always to go for the youngest babysitter. This will also be listed in her profile as a personality trait and a preference.

If your child is over 3 years old, a 20-year old babysitter will be ideal. The ones we work with are super creative, active and definitely fun. Most of the activities they prefer will be outdoors, they are very into sports, competition, dancing, singing, their imagination is endless.

Which cities can I find a babysitter in Costa Rica?

Costa Rica has more towns than cities. Our main city is San José which I consider to be a small one, so transportation for a babysitter is pretty easy.

On the pacific side we cover the area of Guanacaste which is a very touristy destination nowadays especially for families. Tamarindo and Nosara are our main locations, in the Puntarenas area, we have babysitters located in Santa Teresa and Montezuma, also Jaco Hermosa, Dominical and Manuel Antonio.

On the Caribbean coast we cover the areas of Cahuita, Playa Negra, Puerto Viejo, Cocles and Playa Chiquita.

Do babysitters in Costa Rica have first aid training?

Some do, and we arrange for this training for those who are working with us and don’t have it yet. This country is not accustomed to such requests and so we are accommodating this need by providing them. You will see these details in their profiles and of course during our conversations we can discuss the babysitters who do have this training.

How far in advance should I book a babysitter in Costa Rica?

To guarantee availability especially for high season and to make sure you have taken the time to go through the options and you are happy with your choice, we recommend at least 2 to 3 weeks in advance.

Can I find a babysitter who accommodates special needs’ children?

At the moment we have one licensed babysitter qualified to accommodate special needs. As we find more babysitters that meet our requirements we can expand our network of specialized babysitters.

These babysitters understand the sensitivity and strength needed to tend to the emotional and physical aspects that come with this relationship.

Can I find a babysitter that is familiar with the local attractions and activities for kids?

Most of our travel nannies are familiar with locations and activities for families in different regions. Also the babysitters in each region have knowledge of many local activities, much like a tour guide would. We also make recommendations depending on the season and the family’s preference.

Are there any cultural norms or etiquette I should be aware of when hiring a babysitter in Costa Rica?

Not anymore. Local babysitters here are mostly accustomed to working with tourists and are not surprised or offended easily.

Standard etiquette applies regarding polite behavior and respect for one another. Our babysitters are advised to care for the way they dress in a modest way, including bathing suits. This for us is important as basic etiquette.

How can I ensure effective communication with my babysitter while I’m away?

Under our rules, the use of cell phones by babysitters is limited, so they can give full attention to the kids and respect the privacy of the families.

However, the babysitter needs to have her phone when the parents go away. This allows her to contact the parents in an emergency, as well as allowing the parents to check on the kids. This is essential for the mental well-being of the parents as well as a general safety measure.

Can I find a babysitter who can handle multiple children at once?

Yes we can handle a maximum of five kids per babysitter, depending on their ages. If they are all in similar ages, it’s a lot easier for the babysitter to handle that many kids at once. If there’s a big difference in ages between kids (especially if they are babies or toddlers), it’s a bit complicated but not impossible.

We clearly will have to focus on the youngest ones. If there is more than one baby I would say we need more than one babysitter.

Can I find a babysitter who can help with schoolwork and tutoring?

Some of our babysitters are school teachers or are passionate about education. They would love to help your children with their schoolwork or extra learning activities.

Are there any additional services offered by babysitters, such as meal preparation or light housekeeping?

All of our babysitters feel comfortable preparing light meals. Some also enjoy cooking with the kids and for the kids. But cooking or cleaning for the family is not part of our job.

However we do encourage the kids to clean up after themselves and organize their toys, with help from the babysitter.

How can I find a babysitter with experience in caring for children with allergies or medical conditions?

To find a babysitter experienced in caring for children with allergies or medical conditions, you’ll have the opportunity to provide this essential information when you fill out the booking form on our website. This ensures the babysitter is fully informed ahead of time.

Once you’re matched with a babysitter, the initial meeting with the parents serves as a detailed orientation. During this time, you’ll go over all the specific care instructions and daily routines for your child. Typically, for the first day or two, the babysitter will follow the routine alongside the parent to ensure a thorough understanding and to avoid any assumptions.

All crucial details about your child’s health and needs should be clearly listed on the booking form. We’ll also review this information with you to ensure complete clarity before the babysitter takes over the responsibilities.

Can I request a specific gender for my babysitter in Costa Rica?

So far we only have female babysitters.

Can I find a babysitter who is trained in water safety for pool or beach outings?

Certainly, water safety is a priority for us, especially since many families vacationing in Costa Rica spend a lot of time at the beach or have access to a pool. While our babysitters may not have formal water safety training, we do require them to be proficient swimmers.

If you have specific guidelines or restrictions concerning water activities, you can discuss these directly with the babysitter. Rest assured, any instructions you provide will be followed diligently to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for your family.

How do I establish rules and expectations with my babysitter before hiring them?

During the video call you can get clear about your rules and this will be expected as all families have some type of rules.

How do I create a backup plan in case my babysitter is unavailable?

It is unlikely for a babysitter to suddenly become unavailable as they value this work highly. But if the occasion is very important we can help to create a backup plan through another person that would be on call.

Is it possible to hire a babysitter for a special event or wedding in Costa Rica?

Yes, all special events can be discussed thoroughly so that you can receive a customized quote. It will depend upon travel, quantity of children and ages, and time frame. Please reach out so we can discuss this.
